Windows 11 enters late 2026 as a far more complete operating system than the version Microsoft released in 2021. Its centered interface no longer feels experimental, core window management is excellent, hardware-backed security provides a strong baseline, and support for conventional desktop software remains its greatest advantage. Version 26H2 is now the current annual update for most eligible existing PCs.
The operating system also asks users to accept Microsoft’s direction. Hardware eligibility remains strict, a Microsoft account and internet connection are required during personal setup for Home and Pro, updates arrive in stages, and AI is moving from an optional app toward system-level components and experimental agents. Windows 11 is good; it is not frictionless.

Windows 11 in six judgments
- Everyday usability
- Polished, approachable, and efficient once Start, Search, and taskbar habits settle.
- Window management
- A major strength thanks to Snap Layouts, virtual desktops, and strong multi-monitor behavior.
- Compatibility
- Still the broadest mainstream PC software and hardware ecosystem, though old drivers and specialist tools require checks.
- Security
- A better default foundation than older Windows versions, backed by TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, virtualization-based protections, and continuing servicing.
- AI
- Potentially useful but fragmented by hardware, account, region, preview status, and changing product boundaries.
- Upgrade experience
- Usually straightforward on supported hardware, but safeguard holds and staged availability should be respected.
Verdict: Windows 11 is the right mainstream Windows version for a supported PC in 2026. It earns that recommendation through maturity and security rather than one must-have feature. Owners of incompatible hardware should plan a safe replacement or supported alternative instead of forcing an installation that may not receive reliable support.
What version 26H2 changes
Microsoft released Windows 11 version 26H2 to general availability on September 29, 2026. It shares a servicing foundation with versions 24H2 and 25H2, so eligible PCs can move through a relatively small enablement package instead of a traditional full operating-system replacement. The update also resets the support lifecycle and enables selected features already delivered through monthly servicing.
Rollout is phased. An eligible computer may not see 26H2 immediately, and Microsoft can apply a safeguard hold when a driver, application, or device combination has a known problem. Do not bypass a hold on a machine needed for work. Wait for Windows Update to offer the release unless there is a tested business deployment plan.
Version naming needs care. Windows 11 26H1 shipped only on select new devices built around a different Windows core and was not an in-place update for existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs. Most existing eligible devices follow the 26H2 path. Check Settings > System > About and Windows Update > Update history rather than inferring the version from purchase date.
Known issues are a reason to update deliberately
Microsoft’s release-health dashboard listed active and mitigated issues after the 26H2 launch. At the time of review, an October notice described crashes in some applications that rely on Windows AC-3 audio decoding after a September update. Earlier rollout issues included certain USB audio failures, domain trust problems on some Credential Guard systems, and desktop loading problems in some virtual desktop environments.
This does not mean 26H2 is broadly unsafe. It means feature and quality updates should be managed like changes, not treated as background magic. Home users should maintain a current backup and allow normal staged delivery. Businesses should test representative hardware, drivers, security software, VPNs, peripherals, and line-of-business applications before wide deployment.
The interface finally feels coherent enough
Windows 11’s visual system uses rounded corners, calmer surfaces, modern icons, and a centered taskbar by default. Quick Settings separates common controls from notifications, while the Settings app now covers far more work that once required Control Panel. Dark mode and scaling are generally more consistent than they were at launch, although legacy dialogs still appear.
Start remains a compromise. Pinned apps and search provide a fast route to software, but recommendations, account prompts, and promotional suggestions can make the space feel less personal than it should. The taskbar also remains less flexible than classic Windows for users who want unusual placement or deep customization.
Search is useful for launching applications and finding settings, but local and web results can blur together. A disciplined folder system and direct app pinning remain faster for predictable daily work. Fortunately, Windows 11 accommodates both a casual search-first user and someone who lives in File Explorer, keyboard shortcuts, and terminal tools.
Snap Layouts are the feature worth learning
Hovering over a maximize button or using the Windows key with Z reveals layouts for arranging windows. Snap groups preserve related application sets, and virtual desktops separate different contexts. These tools turn a wide monitor into an organized workspace without installing a third-party tiling utility.
Multi-monitor behavior is another practical improvement. Windows can remember window positions as displays disconnect and reconnect, which helps a laptop move between a desk and travel. Behavior still depends on application design and docking hardware, so test sleep, wake, scaling, and display order with the actual setup.
Hardware requirements remain the biggest dividing line
Microsoft’s minimum specification calls for a compatible 64-bit processor with at least two cores at 1GHz, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a 720p display larger than nine inches. The processor must also appear on Microsoft’s supported list.
Those are installation minimums, not a good buying target. A comfortable 2026 PC should generally have at least 8GB of memory and 256GB of SSD storage; 16GB and 512GB are the more durable baseline for multitasking. Our budget laptop guide explains why memory and storage matter more than a temporarily low sticker price.
Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use require internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial setup. An organization can manage identity differently with eligible editions and deployment tooling. People who require a completely local setup should verify the current supported path before buying rather than relying on a workaround that Microsoft may close.
Security is the strongest upgrade argument
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements were controversial because they excluded otherwise functional PCs. They also established a hardware root for protections that are harder to deliver consistently on an unrestricted legacy platform. Windows Hello, BitLocker or device encryption on eligible systems, Microsoft Defender, SmartScreen, virtualization-based security, memory integrity, and exploit mitigations create layers rather than relying on one antivirus engine.
Security still depends on operations. Install updates, use multifactor authentication, keep recovery keys in a safe place, run daily work without unnecessary administrator rights, and maintain offline or versioned backups. No operating system can protect a user who approves a malicious prompt or loses the only copy of encrypted recovery information.
Windows 10 reached general end of support on October 14, 2025. Extended Security Updates can provide a temporary bridge for eligible systems, but they are not a permanent substitute for a supported platform. Replacing an old PC can be disruptive; our business laptop guide covers supportability, ports, repair, and fleet concerns that matter beyond processor speed.
Copilot and Copilot+ are not the same thing
The Copilot app can run on many Windows 11 PCs as a cloud-connected assistant. Copilot+ PC features depend on newer hardware with a qualifying neural processing unit and may also vary by processor family, region, language, and software version. Buyers should evaluate the exact feature on the exact device rather than assuming a Copilot key unlocks every demonstration.
Microsoft services on-device models as separate AI components for compatible Copilot+ PCs. These components support image processing, generation, transformation, and the Phi Silica local language model. On-device execution can reduce latency and keep some processing local, but it does not automatically make every AI interaction private; the app and feature documentation still determines where data goes.
Experimental Copilot Actions go further by letting an agent interact with apps and files. Microsoft describes a separate agent account and isolated workspace, with the feature disabled by default during preview. That is the correct cautious posture. An agent that can click, type, and modify files needs granular permission, visible activity, reliable interruption, and human review. Preview status should be treated literally, especially on a work machine.
Gaming remains a Windows advantage
Windows has the broadest PC game library, graphics-driver support, peripheral compatibility, and launcher ecosystem. Auto HDR, DirectStorage on supported hardware and games, variable refresh, Game Mode, and Xbox integration reinforce that position. The practical experience still depends much more on the GPU, CPU, cooling, drivers, display, and individual game than on the operating-system version alone.
Security features can affect a small number of edge-case benchmarks, while disabling them creates a wider risk than a marginal frame-rate gain justifies. Measure the actual game and investigate current driver guidance before turning off memory integrity or other protections.
Application and device compatibility
Conventional x64 Windows remains the safest choice for obscure peripherals and legacy desktop software. Arm-based Windows PCs have improved dramatically through native applications and emulation, but specialist drivers, anti-cheat systems, plug-ins, VPN clients, and hardware utilities still need explicit confirmation.
Before an upgrade, inventory printers, scanners, audio interfaces, accessibility devices, security software, disk tools, and any application tied to a license dongle. Check the vendor’s Windows 11 statement, not merely whether an installer launches. A restore plan should include data, installation media, license information, and recovery keys.
A safe upgrade checklist
- Run PC Health Check or use Windows Update to confirm official eligibility.
- Install current firmware and drivers from the PC or component manufacturer.
- Back up important files and verify that the backup can be opened.
- Record encryption recovery keys and application licenses.
- Check storage space and remove failing or unsupported peripherals.
- Let Windows Update offer 26H2; respect any safeguard hold.
- After installation, test audio, networking, sleep, external displays, printing, security software, and essential apps during the rollback window.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows 11 free?
An upgrade is generally free for an activated Windows 10 PC that meets the requirements and is offered Windows 11. A new PC normally includes a license. Edition upgrades and standalone retail licenses may cost extra.
Should I install Windows 11 26H2 now?
Install it when Windows Update offers it to a supported personal PC after a current backup. Organizations and users with specialist hardware should test first and review Microsoft’s release-health dashboard.
Can I install Windows 11 without TPM 2.0?
Unofficial bypasses exist, but they create an unsupported configuration with uncertain servicing and security behavior. We do not recommend that route for a machine that matters.
Do I need a Copilot+ PC?
No. Ordinary Windows applications, gaming, browsing, and productivity work do not require Copilot+ hardware. Buy it only when the device is otherwise a good fit and specific on-device AI features provide demonstrated value.
Bottom line
Windows 11 is now a mature, capable operating system with excellent window management, vast software compatibility, strong gaming support, and a meaningful hardware-backed security baseline. Version 26H2 is an evolutionary update, which is appropriate for a platform people depend on every day.
The remaining objections are real: supported-hardware rules strand some PCs, personal setup pushes a Microsoft account, legacy interface fragments remain, and Microsoft’s AI expansion deserves scrutiny rather than automatic acceptance. On an eligible computer, however, Windows 11 is the sensible Windows choice. Upgrade carefully, keep backups, and enable new AI powers only when their permissions and benefits are clear.
